Pretty Summer Vegan Dresses
This
season’s hottest and most wearable fashion trend is the dress.
You’ll see them everywhere, and they’re extremely flattering,
comfortable, and versatile. And that’s not all. The majority of
spring/summer dresses are vegan. What a coup! So many women are
supporting cruelty-free dressing without even knowing it. Of course,
what we’d ideally like is for them to make it a conscious choice,
but maybe next year! In the meantime, you can be fashionable and
compassionate, too. Here’s what we have to choose from: |
|

Photos: Nordstrom |
The Floral Dress: Forget those little, cutesy flowers.
This season the florals are elegant, sophisticated, and stunning.
Many of them are what are called “watercolor” florals because the
design resembles the brushstrokes of a watercolor painting. It’s the
perfect way to celebrate summer! Just be careful. This is the one
category of dress where you will find quite a few made in silk as
opposed to other more vegan-friendly fabrics. Some examples include
the
Komarov Pleated Floral Dress and the Maggy
London Floral Sateen Sheath Dress, both from Nordstrom.
The Maxi Dress: Think 1970’s. Hippy meets 2009 trendy
20-somethings. That is what the maxi dress is all about. Although
anyone can wear it (cautiously), it’s really designed for the
younger crowd, and is meant to be worn with pretty, summery flat
sandals… vegan, of course! Some examples include the
Zinc Slip Knot Maxi Dress and the AK
Anne Klein Dip Dye Maxi Dress, both from Nordstrom.
The Casual Dress: Dresses are no longer exclusively worn for
work or for dressy occasions. They are now the go-to outfit for a
day about town or even lounging at home. Often made out of cotton,
linen, or a comfy knit rayon/spandex, they usually slip over your
head and are super comfortable. Some examples include the
Bailey 44 Acid Test Flip Flop Dress and the
Tommy Bahama Kailua Jersey Dress, both from Nordstrom.
The White Dress: Since the summer season is so short, now is
the time to wear white, and white dresses are everywhere. They’re
pretty, airy, and oh, so summery. Of course, you have to beware of
the see-through factor, so choose wisely. Some examples include the
Suzi
Chin Maggy Boutique Twist Strap Pleated Dress and the
Maggy London Matte Jersey Bubble Dress, both from Nordstrom.

Vegan counseling... for a positive change in your life
You've probably heard a lot in the news recently
about reasons to give up meat and animal products in your diet.
Being vegan is healthier, it's better for the environment, and
better for animals. But you're still eating meat, eggs & dairy.
Why? If you've always
thought about becoming vegan, but for some reason - spouse, family,
peer pressure, the media - haven't
done so yet, our
Salem Vegan Counseling sessions
for individuals and families will help
you to more easily transition from
consuming animal products to a more healthy, holistic
vegan lifestyle. Private counseling sessions last approximately 1 hour. No pressure.
Receive personalized vegan and animal rights counseling and support
from experienced vegans who have already made the transition. Free Vegetarian Starter Kit
included. Phone or email SVS to schedule a free, personal vegan
counseling session. For directions to the Salem Access Television
building.

SVS on Salem Access Television Channel 3
July
3 - 31: Pandemic Prevention
SVS Presents: Fridays at 10 PM on
SATV in Salem
The role of domestic chickens in the emergence of
bird flu
This July, Salem Vegan Society, in cooperation
with the HSUS, Dr. Michael Greger, and Salem Access Television, is proud to
present to Salem residents the acclaimed presentation, Pandemic
Prevention, updated by the HSUS in 2008, and presented by Dr. Greger. In
an engaging multimedia presentation, Greger traces the emergence of
pathogens from the human-animal interface and suggests ways to reduce the
likelihood of future pandemics. Filmed in Washington, DC,
before a live audience. According to Ronald Atlas, co-director of the Center
for Health Hazards Preparedness, "Dr. Greger's talk on the looming threat of
an avian pandemic is gripping and graphic. He addresses the public health
issues and provides a perspective that many have not yet heard. His
presentation received very positive feedback from physicians, researchers,
and public health workers.
His focus on the role of domesticated chickens in the emergence of highly
pathogenic influenza viruses was thought provoking and has engendered much
discussion on the appropriate policy issues to reduce the threat."
Suitable for all viewers. |
